About the Campaign

Mobile Market Family

Dana Cowin, City Harvest Food Council member and the former Editor-in-Chief of Food & Wine Magazine, started Share Lunch Fight Hunger in 2002 because she wanted to do something to help children facing hunger in NYC. By passing brown paper bags out to friends in the media industry and asking them to donate their lunch money to City Harvest, they raised an incredible $60,000 in one day.

Since then, thousands of New Yorkers have come together each spring to support City Harvest’s annual Share Lunch Fight Hunger campaign, raising more than $13 million to help feed our youngest neighbors. Through hundreds of fundraisers taking place at the same time, New Yorkers demonstrate the power of coming together to make a difference for our city’s kids. Join us by starting a team, and rallying your friends, family, and colleagues to donate. Just $15 helps make 41 happy tummies. Together, we can turn one lunch into a bunch!

Due to the current COVID-19 crisis and its devastating economic impact, our work is more important than ever. Share Lunch Fight Hunger raises funds to ensure that every child in New York City has the food that they need to thrive.

About City Harvest

City Harvest is New York’s first and largest food rescue organization, helping to feed millions of New Yorkers who struggle to put meals on their tables. This year, we will rescue 144 million pounds of fresh, nutritious food and deliver it—free of charge—to more than 400 food pantries, soup kitchens, community partners and our own Mobile Markets across the five boroughs. We work alongside our community partners to boost community capacity, expand nutrition education, and strengthen local food systems.

As New York City continues to grapple with the devastating fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic, City Harvest is committed to feeding all of our neighbors—one meal, one day, one New Yorker at a time. Learn more about our COVID-19 response work.
