About the Campaign

More than 20 years ago, Dana Cowin, City Harvest Food Council Member and then-Editor-in-Chief of Food & Wine Magazine, started Share Lunch Fight Hunger because she wanted to help feed children facing hunger in New York City. By passing out lunch bags to friends in the media industry and asking them to donate their lunch money to City Harvest, they raised an incredible $60,000 in just one day.

Since then, thousands of New Yorkers have come together each spring to support City Harvest’s annual Share Lunch Fight Hunger campaign, raising enough to help provide 38.5 million meals to NYC children and their families. Through hundreds of simultaneous fundraisers, New Yorkers show the power of coming together to make a difference for our city’s kids. Join us by starting a team and rallying your friends, family, and colleagues to donate.

Kim a participant at our Melrose Mobile Market®, recently shared her story with us: “I live with my family. There are five of us—my grandchildren, my son, my daughter, and me. I’ve been coming to this market for about two years. I come every time that they have it. It helps a lot. The prices and inflation are all going high...five pieces of meat will now add up to $60. It’s horrible. As long as there are places like this where we can get food and don’t have to buy it, I’ll do what I have to do to keep food in the house.”

Share Lunch Fight Hunger raises funds to help City Harvest ensure that children in New York City have the food that they need to thrive over the summer when access to free school meals may become limited. Join in and sign up your team today!

About City Harvest

City Harvest is New York’s first and largest food rescue organization, helping to feed millions of New Yorkers who struggle to put meals on their tables. During our 40 years serving New Yorkers in need, we have rescued more than one billion pounds of fresh, nutritious food and delivered it—free of charge—to hundreds of food pantries, soup kitchens, community partners, and our own Mobile Markets® across the five boroughs. This year, we will rescue and distribute more than 75 million pounds of nutritious food to our neighbors in need. Named one of America's Top 100 Charities by Forbes, City Harvest works alongside our community partners to boost community capacity, expand nutrition education, and strengthen local food systems. Since our founding in 1982, City Harvest has always been there to feed our city—one day, one meal, one New Yorker at a time.
