About the Campaign

More than 20 years ago, City Harvest Food Council member and then-Editor-in-Chief of Food & Wine Magazine Dana Cowin started Share Lunch Fight Hunger because she wanted to help feed children and families facing hunger in New York City. By passing out lunch bags to friends in the media industry and asking them to donate their lunch money to City Harvest, they raised an incredible $60,000 in just one day.

Since then, thousands of New Yorkers have come together each spring to support City Harvest’s annual Share Lunch Fight Hunger campaign, raising enough to help feed more than 168,000 NYC children and their families for the entire summer. Through dozens of peer-to-peer fundraising teams, New Yorkers show the power of coming together to make a difference for our city's kids and families. Join us by starting a team and rallying your friends, family, and collegues to donate.

M., a community member living in Brooklyn, visited City Harvest's Bed-Stuy Mobile Market for the first time last summer. She shared her story:

“The kids are home from school, so I could use the juice, I could use potatoes. I do a lot of cooking. I could use the onions. When I've had [food], there's no need for me to come here. But right now, it's summertime. The kids are home, and we can use a bit of help."

About City Harvest

City Harvest is New York’s first and largest food rescue organization, collecting high-quality, nutritious food that would otherwise go to waste to help provide free food for millions of New Yorkers experiencing food insecurity. Since our founding in 1982, we have rescued more than one billion pounds of fresh, nutritious food and delivered it—free of charge—to hundreds of food pantries, soup kitchens, community partners, and our own Mobile Markets® across the five boroughs. This year, we will rescue and distribute more than 81 million pounds of nutritious food to our neighbors in need. By redirecting that food to families, we will also prevent the equivalent of more than 20 million kilograms of CO2 from entering the atmosphere. Named one of America's Top 100 Charities by Forbes, City Harvest also works alongside our community partners to build their capacity, expand nutrition education, and advocate for systems change through effective public policy. For more than 40 years, City Harvest has been there to feed our city—one day, one meal, one New Yorker at a time.
