About the Campaign

More than 20 years ago, City Harvest Food Council Member and then-Editor-in-Chief of Food & Wine Magazine Dana Cowin started Share Lunch Fight Hunger because she wanted to help feed children and families facing hunger in New York City. By passing out lunch bags to friends in the media industry and asking them to donate their lunch money to City Harvest, they raised an incredible $60,000 in just one day.

Since then, thousands of New Yorkers have come together each spring to support City Harvest’s annual Share Lunch Fight Hunger campaign, raising enough to help provide more than 41 million meals to NYC children and their families. Through hundreds of simultaneous fundraisers, New Yorkers show the power of coming together to make a difference for our city’s kids. Join us by starting a team and rallying your friends, family, and colleagues to donate.

M., a community member living near Sheepshead Bay, recently visited City Harvest’s Sunset Park Mobile Market for the first time and shared her story:

“I live with my husband and my two boys, who are 14 and 12 years old. I constantly have to keep food in the house, but prices have gone up tremendously. With City Harvest and other food banks around the neighborhood, it helps with food. I know that coming here helps with the food costs. If I go to the market, I could use that money towards something else instead, whether it’s a box of cereal for the boys, a carton of juice, or something else that I couldn’t otherwise get. It helps tremendously.”

Share Lunch Fight Hunger raises funds to help City Harvest ensure that children in New York City have the food that they need to thrive over the summer, when access to free school meals may become limited. Join in and sign up your team today!

About City Harvest

City Harvest is New York’s first and largest food rescue organization, collecting high-quality, nutritious food that would otherwise go to waste to help feed the millions of New Yorkers who struggle to put meals on their tables. In over 40 years serving New Yorkers experiencing food insecurity, we have rescued more than one billion pounds of fresh, nutritious food and delivered it—free of charge—to hundreds of food pantries, soup kitchens, community partners, and our own Mobile Markets® across the five boroughs. This year, we will rescue and distribute more than 77 million pounds of nutritious food to our neighbors in need. By redirecting that food to families, we will also prevent the equivalent of more than 20 million kilograms of CO2 from entering the atmosphere. Named one of America's Top 100 Charities by Forbes, City Harvest also works alongside our community partners to build their capacity, expand nutrition education, and advocate for systems change through effective public policy. Since our founding in 1982, City Harvest has always been there to feed our city—one day, one meal, one New Yorker at a time.
