Let's Feed People In Need!
I have been on the junior board of City Harvest for almost two years, and I could not be more proud of the organization. It addresses a critical and growing problem: the food insecurity of approximately 1.5 million New Yorkers who are struggling to put food on their tables. And it does so by rescuing food -- tens of millions of pounds each year -- that would otherwise be wasted, and delivering it free of charge to people in need.
The COVID pandemic has dramatically worsened the problem of food insecurity in New York City and, in response, City Harvest substantially scaled up its operations to address the growing need. Since March, City Harvest has rescued and delivered 72 million pounds of food -- a 63% increase compared to the same period last year -- while modifying its operations to comply with CDC guidelines and protect its staff. City Harvest also hired unemployed restaurant workers to repack food for distribution, which helped New Yorkers who are sadly out of work during this time.
Even as there is hopeful news about an effective vaccine, the economic crisis continues to worsen and will remain with us for months, if not years. In response, City Harvest has set an ambitious goal to double the size of its operations and deliver 109 million pounds of food by July 2021 -- a 70% increase over the prior year. Achieving this critical goal won’t be easy and will require a tremendous amount of support.
For City Harvest to help as many people as possible, your financial support is critical. Please consider making a contribution to the organization today. Every $1 you donate helps City Harvest feed two New Yorkers for a day, and will make a real difference at a time of tremendous need.
